What's the Best Tonneau Cover for a 2019 Chevy 3/4 ton With 8 Foot Bed?

Chevy Owner: I have a 2019 Chevy 3/4 ton long box and I'm looking for a Tonneau cover for that.

Sean: I never get that 3/4 ton. Is that a 3500?

Chevy Owner: Yes that's a 3500.

Sean: Okay. Yeah I've been doing this for 10 years, and I still, I'm not a truck guy I guess. Only trucks I've ever had are 1500s Rams.

Chevy Owner: Yeah, this is a heavy duty 3/4 ton. Eight foot box, 2019.

Sean: You wanted the MX4, correct?? The BAKflip?

Chevy Owner: Um no, I was wondering what your recommendations were.

Sean: Oh okay. Well man, there's all sorts of options. What do you use your truck for?

Chevy Owner: For work and for play.

Sean: Okay. Do you have a fifth wheel or anything like that?

Chevy Owner: Nope no fifth wheel

Sean: Okay. Yeah man, it kinda depends on your style at that point and what you wanna spend. I think an MX4 would look really good on there. It's matte black and is flush, it's gonna sit flush to your bed rails.

Chevy Owner: And you'll lift it up from the front and open it? Or do you have to flip 'em all the way back?

Sean: You'll have to flip 'em all the way back.

Chevy Owner: I was just wondering if they make a cargo, you know that goes up front of that too?

Sean: They do. They make a BAK Box. Its called the BAK Box 2.

Chevy Owner: Any other options or covers you would recommend?

Sean: Other options than that? I mean that's gonna be the best option as far as the folding plush mount cover goes. If you wanted something that's gonna sit on top of the rails, you mentioned opening it from the front as well I would say Encore. Extang Encore. But it sits on top of the rails instead of in between.

Chevy Owner: I don't want that either, that would probably look bad. That flips too I take it?

Sean: Correct. Yeah it flips to the rear and it flips toward the glass and it flips towards the tailgate. But on that cover you can't travel with it open in any position, you can't travel with it open up against...it doesn't lean up against the cab, so you're still gonna, you're losing a little bit of bed there with that one. The other option that I was gonna suggest, and actually the best cover in my opinion as far as functionality and look goes, it's just a little pricey is the Retrax. I don't know if you have ever heard of them.

Chevy Owner: I have. Ok, I think you have given me some good suggestions. Let me do some more research on these covers and I'll call you back.

Sean: Sounds good.

Do I Have to Drill Anything to Install an Extang Solid Fold 2.0 for a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500

Dodge Ram Owner: Quick question. I need to get a Tonneau cover for my truck. I just bought a truck, and the one from my old truck doesn't fit the new truck. And I need it because I'm going on vacation and I need to put all the luggage in the back and I have to have a cover. So I need it quickly.

Shawn: Okay. No problem

Dodge Ram Owner: How long does shipping take to get one of these covers?

Shawn: What kind of cover are you looking at?

Dodge Ram Owner: Well I like American Hard Tri-fold.

Shawn: Okay. Let's see here. American Hard Tri-fold. Are you referring to like the Tonneau Covers USA?

Dodge Ram Owner: No, I saw one online somewhere else. All it says is American Hard Tri-fold Tonneau Cover. The problem is when I called the other place they were telling me that I can't get this from them until the end of next week.

Shawn: What's the truck?

Dodge Ram Owner: It's a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500. It's a new model. The one with the 6 lug wheel, 5.7 bed.

Shawn: I don't think that's going to be something that I can get, unfortunately. We don't carry that.

Dodge Ram Owner: What else can you recommend?

Shawn: The only thing the closest I can get you for a hard tri-fold cover, and it's going to be night and day versus what you're looking at, but it's going to be way better quality, is the Extang Solid Fold. And that one goes for a few hundred bucks more.

Dodge Ram Owner: And how quickly can I get that one?

Shawn: Let me see.

Dodge Ram Owner: You're saying this a better cover?

Shawn: Yeah. The one you're looking at, I mean, I don't know, I might be biased. But I worked for the company that owns Extang for about 10 years. And yeah, they just make a great product. And the one you're looking at, I don't know who makes that. It looks just like Extang's soft folding cover, but they're saying it's a hard folding so I don't know. But based on your location it looks like it can ship tomorrow, and then arrive at you I'd say next day if not the following day.

Dodge Ram Owner: Is there a way to see how it clamps on underneath?

Shawn: Yeah. If you're on Extang's website, you can go to Solid Fold 2.0. Scroll down and you'll see installation, and there's a video right there. It's very simple though, man. You've got two clamps on the very front panel. And then you've got two in the rear by the tailgate. Essentially what you're going to do is the clamp is recessed into the cover. So you're going to grab it, pull it down, and then you're going to loosen it. It's got a little hook on there, so to speak. And it actually hooks on your rails.

Dodge Ram Owner: I mean, I don't have any rails or anything. So you're talking about the side of my bed?

Shawn: Correct.

Dodge Ram Owner: So I don't have to drill anything to install the cover?

Shawn: Nope. No, it's just got those little clamps. It's like a J is how I would describe them. You just loosen them up, and they clamp right onto the side. You don't even have to add an extra rail like if you were to buy a back flip or one of those that sit between the rails. They come with two separate rails that you have to clamp onto your bed rails. This doesn't do that.

Dodge Ram Owner: I see the other ones were actually like a vinyl. That American one. It's material, but it has a hard plate or something underneath it. So, it's actually, they call it a hard because it's got the hard bottom. But I don't want somebody to be able to cut into my back with a knife or something. Do you know what I mean?

Shawn: Yeah. No, you're not going to have that with this. You're going to have, it's an inch thick EnduraShield panel, which is their patented design there, that panel.

Dodge Ram Owner: The seams don't leak?

Shawn: No. From what I understand, this is the best folding cover for keeping water out of the bed since it sits on top of the rails, instead of between the rails like a lot of folding covers do. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're going to like this a lot more. Because I'll tell you, even though you spent an extra couple hundred bucks, you're buying American made. You're not buying Chinese like that other stuff.

Dodge Ram Owner: Oh really? Oh good. Well, that sold it right there. Go ahead. Let's just go ahead and do it.

Shawn: And I'll get it placed in my distributor right away too. Just to make sure it makes it on tomorrows truck.

Are There Any Folding Tonneau Covers for a GMC Sierra That Are Water Resistant?

GMC Sierra Owner: I have a folding tonneau cover now. Do you recommend any other covers? I mean, mine leaks. The water doesn't bother me so much, but I'm just curious if there are any other folding covers that might be better and also easy to install.

Sean: Well, I just want to pre-warn you that I was actually with Undercover for a decade and they bought BAKFlip and a lot of tonneau cover companies that are actually owned by the same company, which Truck Hero. It's the name they're owned under, and folding covers are as far as water goes, the Achilles heel of the industry. We've done everything from different rivets, screws, seals, gluing, processes, everything. Unfortunately, on a folding cover, you're not able to keep 100% of the water out. Now, there are things in place with the drain tubes and the rails are channeled like a gutter, it's supposed to push the water to the drain tube and out the head if the rain tubes are installed properly. Which is going to unfortunately, require either some cutting if you have those little black plastic caps in the front of your bed, or some drilling if you don't, in order for those drain tubes to get out of the bed, so that's going to be the toughest part of the installation right there. The rest of it you're going to get two rails and eight clamps, you're going to have four clamps on the other side. Then the cover actually comes with elevator bolts and star knobs so essentially you sit the cover down on your bed, you go to the very front close to the window, put the elevator bolts through, and then from the underside you screw the star knobs on and your cover's installed, so that's as easy as it is. Well, I'm not very mechanically inclined and I've done about 50 of them, so.

GMC Sierra Owner: Well that means you know what you're doing.

Sean: Now I do.

GMC Sierra Owner: Do you recommend any other covers? I mean, the water doesn't bother me, mine when it's down, my bed is running water.

Sean: That's a little crazy there. As far as the look goes, the MX4 is going to be right there. If you didn't care about the low profile and sitting between your truck bed rails and you wanted something more that's going to sit on top of the rails, I would have you check out the Extang, and that's the Solid Fold. That one sits on top of the rails, but that allows less water intrusion, it folds the same way. It does not fold up against the back window. So you can't have the cover all the way open when you drive but you can have two panels open if you need to hold something tall. The good part about the Solid Fold is, it's cheaper, and it does not come with a separate rail system. At the front of the bed, at the very front panel toward the glass, you're going to have these two knobs that come down and it has a little lip on it, you loosen it enough so you can get that lip underneath your side rail, and then you clamp it shut. You do that on either side and that's how it secures it to the truck. When you fold it all the way down, the rear-end has sort of the same thing, except for those are spring-loaded, so you can tighten them wherever you need to. Let's say it's a little loose, so you just grab that handle, twist it, which will tighten it, and once it has that lip on there, and you clamp it over, it'll pull it down towards the bed.

GMC Sierra Owner: Oh, my goodness. So you have a little less water?

Sean: Correct. Anything that's going to sit on top of the rails, as a rule of thumb, you're going to have less water intrusion. Fewer opportunities for it to get in there.

GMC Sierra Owner: I'm still open to what you're saying. I'm just going to go transfer some money into my account and I'll call you back.

How Can I Get the Best Price on a BAKFlip MX4 for a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500?

GMC Sierra Owner: I'm looking for a BAKFlip MX4 for a 2018 GMC Sierra Truck 1500, and it's a standard bed. So I'm assuming that's about the 6' 5” or 6' 6” bed.

Sean: I have one in stock where there's no shipping cost and then there's no tax outside of Arizona.

GMC Sierra Owner: Oh my goodness, wow. You know I'm going to get it. So I'm going to have to go transfer some money. That's the best price I've found on an MX4. Sierra Owner: How easy is it to install? Because I have a tonneau cover but it leaks.

Sean: They're pretty easy to put in. What kind of tonneau cover do you have, just out of curiosity?

GMC Sierra Owner: I would tell you but my truck is actually getting an oil change.

Sean: Is it a folding tonneau cover?

GMC Sierra Owner: Yes it is. And it leaks when I open up my truck bed, there's water already in there.

Sean: Yeah folding covers tend to do that unless you get the kind that sits on top of the rails.

GMC Sierra Owner: Ok, well let's go ahead and get the MX4 then.

Does the Undercover Armor Flex Have the Rail System on it for a 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max With the Short Bed?

Toyota Tundra Owner: My name's Ruben I was calling to get some info on a Tonneau cover.

Shawn: What kind of Tonneau cover you looking at?

Toyota Tundra Owner: I'm looking at the Undercover Armor Flex. Does it have the rail system on it?

Shawn: What kind of truck do you have?

Toyota Tundra Owner: On my truck, it's for a 2018 Tundra Crew Max with the short bed.

Shawn: Those sometimes are a little bit more because of how they have to mount on that rail system. It's an extra kit that goes with it, so let me see what they say here. With deck rail system. You know what? Undercover's actually different, they don't charge you more.

Toyota Tundra Owner: Now do you, what's your sale because I got an email saying that you guys having a sale or something?

Shawn: Yeah the email quote I sent you is actually our new sales price because the prices of everything went up April first, but it's still lower than full retail.

Toyota Tundra Owner: Do you guys match prices, do you have it in stock and do you match prices? Or beat prices?

Shawn: Yes we can typically price match if you can show me proof of pricing elsewhere. But generally we are the lowest you will find.

Toyota Tundra Owner: Oh. Alright man, thank you for your time. I'm going to keep looking around, but I'll probably call you back if you have the lowest prices.

Shawn: You got it, have a good day my friend.

Should I Install a Tonneau Cover Before or After I Get a Spray Liner in My 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500?

Silverado Owner: I'd like to place an order. I'm in Hawaii and your shipping was about one third of the price. From the factory.

Shawn: Oh really? Did you try to go to the factory?

Silverado Owner: Well I just got the info to see how much it was.

Shawn: Yeah they ship, they ship FedEx, I think and yeah, they don't have as good a deal from what I've seen. Alright, so you have a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short bed. New body style?

Silverado Owner: Yeah. New body style

Shawn: Okay. Have you bought from us before?

Silverado Owner: No. I haven't purchased from you before, but I will from now on now that I know you guys have the cheapest shipping to Hawaii.

Shawn: Cool.

Silverado Owner: Do you know if I could install it after I put the spray liner or if I need to do it before?

Shawn: You want to get a spray liner?

Silverado Owner: Yeah I'm going to get the spray liner installed but I wasn't sure if it was going to mess up anything

Shawn: Why do you want to do that?

Silverado Owner: I don't know. Cause I'm going to put stuff in the back.

Shawn: Well, do this, look up Bedrug.

Silverado Owner: Yeah, no, I've had that before. I didn't like it as much

Shawn: No, it's, they're great man, they really are. I don't know what your experience was like, but I had one in all my trucks I love them.

Silverado Owner: Yeah I want to be able to throw stuff in the back and get dirty.

Shawn: Gotcha, well yeah, spray liner. It's probably, it might be a little bit easier to do it before the spray liner, but either way it doesn't really matter. I'd probably do the spray liner first that way the rails aren't in the way, you know. But the worst case scenario, if it doesn't sit all the way against your bulkhead, you know the back panel of your truck bed. If it doesn't bulk, you know, sit all the way against that, you might have to trim the rails a tiny bit to compensate for the material that's going to be on there but usually it's not an issue.

Silverado Owner: Okay.

Shawn: Alright, and that's about it man. We'll get you going.
