How to Pick the Perfect Tonneau Cover
One of the best accessories you can add to your truck is a tonneau cover. Purchasing a tonneau cover includes the added benefits of improved security, top notch weather protection, increased gas mileage, and of course a sleek style overall. However, with so many options to choose from, how do you possibly pick a cover that’s right for you and your truck? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
Leaving your truck bed open means direct exposure to the elements. Risks can include moisture-damaged or corroded cargo, especially in rainy/snowy seasons. If items are not properly secured then they can shift, or worse, fly out of the truck bed in transit. Also, summer days can lead to fading and sun damage to items left in your bed long term.
You can find some protection with any tonneau cover on the market but selecting a cover specific to the weather conditions that you’re most likely to encounter will provide the best experience. If keeping your cargo dry is top priority, then selecting a tonneau cover with premium weather seals is the best path to take. Additionally, some covers even include drainage systems.
Just adding a basic tonneau cover can be a deterrent to anyone considering rifling through your truck bed, but if you plan to store anything of value, then security should be a concern. If that’s the case, then a hard cover with a lock is worth investing in. Keep in mind that a soft cover can be sliced open.
Tonneau covers also help reduce your truck’s aerodynamic drag, which in turn saves on fuel. It’s a win win!
There are some other questions you will want to ask yourself as well. Do you need full access to your truck bed, and if so how often? Do you tend to carry cargo that stands taller than your bed rails? Answering these important questions can ultimately help you determine which cover is right for you and your truck.
The Roll Up Tonneau Cover
Soft Roll-Up Covers
Regular access to your truck bed is made easy with a roll-up tonneau cover. It opens at the rear and can be partially rolled up and secured. Otherwise, it can be left completely open, sitting right behind the cab. If the cover is left closed then it can be secured on the bed rails using Velcro, snaps, or seals.
There are many wonderful brands that offer quality roll up covers. One of our favorites is the Truxedo Lo Pro QT. If you’re also in need of a rack, the the DeeZee Invis-A-Rack pairs beautifully with it.
Already have a toolbox? No problem! We also sell covers that are designed to accommodate it.

Hard Roll-Up Covers
Hard Roll-Up Covers are also offered. The notable attribute of these covers is a soft vinyl layer covering a wall of individual slats which, in the closed position, line up and lock into place. This constructs a hardshell which can, in some cases, support up to 400lbs. Hard roll-up covers are strong enough to act as a barrier to keep items in place, so if you transport cargo with a tendency to shift then this cover is ideal for you.
Pricing may be higher, but the added expense is worth it for the extra protection. We recommend the Truxedo Titanium Hard Rolling Tonneau Cover or the BAK Revolver X2 Rolling Tonneau Cover. However, just like the soft roll-up, there are many great options available.
The Retractable Tonneau Cover
Retractable tonneau covers can provide a barrier (much like the hard roll-up) with aluminum slats. However, the retractable cover rolls up into a canister at the front of the bed rather than rolling on top of itself.
One of the highlighted features of a retractable cover is its ability to provide complete, water resistant, locking bed security. The canister is concealed since it is mounted beneath the level of the cover. One drawback is that it may prevent you from carrying items that extend to the front of the bed.
Power operated retractable covers are the way to go in our opinion. Retrax brings you the ultimate luxury of controlling the retraction with a remote. PowertraxPRO MX features aluminum slats and a black matte powder coat finish while the PowertraxPRO has aluminum slats and gloss black powder coat. Additionally, the PowertraxONE comes with polycarbonate plastic slats and gloss black finish.
Truck Cover USA’s American Roll Retractable Tonneau Cover has aluminum slats finished in a black powder coat if something low-profile is more your taste.
Roll-N-Lock’s A-Series leaves your stake pockets free so you can install a rack, and the M-Series is available if you prefer a smooth sheet of vinyl over the aluminum slats for more style.
If you prefer a low-profile retractable cover, we've got the Truck Covers USA American Roll Retractable Tonneau Cover featuring aluminum slats finished in black powder coat.
The Folding Tonneau Cover
Soft Folding Tonneau Covers
The benefits of a soft folding cover include light weight, a smooth looking uniform look, and reinforcement provided by the framework beneath. This cover tends to sit right on top of the rails, which hides panel gaps and seams, so one of the main reasons people choose this cover is for the sleek look it provides. The vinyl folds along with the panel sections.
A great soft folding cover is Extang's E-Max Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover which allows the sections to fold up instead of down into the bed area.
For low-profile Extang also offers the Trifecta Signature 2.0 Tri-Fold. This cover is designed for easy install (it takes about 5 minutes). This is great news if you find the need to remove your tonneau cover for any reason.
Hard Folding Covers
You can also purchase a folding tonneau covers in a “hard” version instead, with panels that are solid.. These covers usually fold up into three or four sections and sit just behind the cab area when folded. They can also usually support a load of 250-400 pounds (evenly distributed) on top.
Our low-profile recommendations include the BAK BakFlip F1, the BAK BakFlip G2, and most importantly the UnderCover Ultra Flex.
The Tool Box Tonneau Cover
If you already have a toolbox or are interested in getting one, the good news is that you don’t have to forfeit the benefits of a tonneau cover. Toolbox tonneau covers are designed specifically to accommodate standard size toolboxes. They also can be found in folding and roll-up options.
BAK has also designed the BakBox 2 Folding Tool Box, which is meant to conceal itself when used with BAK's BakFlip folding hard tonneau cover or their RollBak retractable tonneau cover.
If you’re in need of a tool box and/or a cover then we can help upgrade your truck with both!
Most importantly, we know that no matter which tonneau cover suits your needs, your budget needs to be kept in mind. Our agents are specially trained to help you find the best cover for you and your truck while making sure that they stay within your price range. A lower price doesn’t mean lower quality by any means, but depending on your needs certain features may be worth investing in.
