Tips for Proper Tonneau Cover Care

tonneau cover tips

When you invest in any product you have every right to expect top performance. This is especially true when it comes to tonneau covers since they are a big part of your truck’s protection, security, and style. Unfortunately, a brand new tonneau cover can’t take care of itself, so it’s up to you to make sure you take all the necessary steps to keep it in tip top shape for years to come.

While a tonneau cover is built to last, there are some things that you can do your end to keep it looking good and fully functioning long-term. Here are some tips on tricks on giving your tonneau cover the care it deserves.

Inspect Your Cover Once a Week

At least one a week make sure you physically inspect the cover. Be on the lookout for any scratches, dings, or nicks as these are bound to happen when you’re out on the road. Identifying these things can help you take preventative measures and/or make small repairs before they get worse.

Double Check the Installation

You may think that once a cover is installed it’s good to go. While in a perfect world that would be nice, you still want to double check the installation during your weekly inspection. It’s important to note if the bolts and clamps are secure. If anything shifts while in motion then you could risk potential damage to the mounting hardware, the cover itself, or even your truck.

Check the Cover’s Operation Often

Any time you open or close the cover make sure that it opens smoothly without resistance and closes securely. If there is resistance or any other issue, then you will want to investigate further. Sometimes lubrication of the rails is required to help keep everything working properly.

A Clean Cover is a Happy Cover

While it’s not expected to wash and wax your truck every single day, it never hurts to clean your cover when you get the chance. You can use recommended vinyl cleaners, but mild soap and water does the job just fine. Keep your cover clean and free of debris and you can extend it’s life tremendously.

Watch the Weight on Your Cover

This tip is pretty self-explanatory. Keeping heavy items on top of your cover can cause it to warp over time, or even sag. Put a reasonable time limit on any items you need to temporarily place on top of the cover.

Have Questions or Concerns?

If you are still unsure on how to properly care for your tonneau cover, or if something just doesn’t seem right, never hesitate to call the manufacturer with questions. Most things outside of normal wear and tear may be covered under warranty.
